New Virtual Support Group: Mom Talk/Una Charla Con Mama
The staff at Hopeful Beginnings is always looking for ways to provide support to the mothers in our community who are in need of a safe space and a message of hope and encouragement. Our current pandemic is leaving many of us lacking in connections with others. Small group gatherings even with outside family members can be a risk and cause us anxiety about health, judgment, or other factors. Many people have limited their social circles to certain members of their family or friend group. Through our counseling that we provide mothers in our community who are experiencing anxiety or depression whether before or after pregnancy or are struggling with the adjustment to motherhood in general, we have found there are many mothers at home with their little ones right now who feel very alone and unseen. This is heartbreaking to think about as our mothers in our communities are the ones right now who need to feel lifted up and heard.
With this in mind, Hopeful Beginnings has started a free virtual support group for moms in the community. Our English speaking group Mom Talk started in January and will open up again to take in new members the first week of September. Mom Talk meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10 AM and is facilitated by two wonderful caring individuals, a counselor, and one of our Master’s of Social Work interns. Their role is to ensure a safe place and provide open questions for reflection between the moms. Our support groups utilize the Zoom virtual platform.
We are excited to offer Una Charla Con Mama for our Spanish-speaking moms. This is a wonderful resource that is crucial in eliminating language barriers when it comes to support for the mothers in our community as well as providing a place for others to celebrate their culture and speak in the beautiful language of Spanish. Una Charla Con Mama meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 10:00 AM and will begin in September.
If you know someone or you are interested in joining one of our virtual support groups, please contact our staff at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 847-870-8181. We ask our participants to be willing to join the group for at least four sessions (which is the duration of two months with a total of four groups). This is so our mothers can create connections and feel safe to share openly. We look forward to seeing more mothers find a community in the months to come through our services at Hopeful Beginnings.
